There is one week each month with ~14 foot tide swings.  During that time women gather shellfish for themselves and to sell.  The shellfish have been depleted close to shore, so they have to walk about a mile out to find them.  A days work yields $3US - $4US..

Dhow casting off it's mooring at midday in Nungwi.  In another hour or two the wind will come up, they will sail for a couple of hours in whichever direction puts them on a reach, put their nets out, and go to sleep.  Then they'll head home and sell fish to the market.
